ALUMNI INVADE ANIME

Thanks to one of our own, several SHU and CTC alumni are currently inflicting their previously-untapped talents as voice-over actors in the increasingly popular field of Japanese animation, otherwise known  Anime.

Bill Timoney (80) has been working as a voice-over artist in English Language-dubbed versions of Anime for almost 15 years. Hes the voice of Parn, the hero of the popular Anime series Record of Lodoss War and its sequel Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. (Lodoss War regularly  turns up on cable TVs Sci-Fi Channel, as does another Anime show featuring Bills voice, E.Y.E.S. of Mars).

Bill also directed the dubbing sessions for several of the Lodoss War episodes. He went on to adapt translated scripts and direct dubbing sessions for other Anime shows, including Jewel Bem Hunter Lime and Heoh and the Blaze-a-Trons.

Since October 2001, Bill has been adapting scripts and directing dubbing sessions for the 26 episode Anime series Gokudo (Swordsman Extraordinaire).  As the main Creative on the project, Bill was able to cast fellow TITRers in supporting roles in the show. A few even booked recurring or lead roles!

Bill explained that the process of learning to sync voices to lip-flap must be done quickly (Anime-dubbing is still a very low-budget process, where swiftness is at a premium). As a result, its easier for him to work with actors who share his same training.  So yes, its all Doc McGlones fault!

Chris Yates ('82) was brought into the Anime-dubbing field by Bill for the Record of Lodoss War series. Chris has gone on to voice numerous titles, and is known as one of the stalwarts of the dubbing industry in New York. Naturally, Bill found a Gokudo role for Chris - that of the villain of the storys climax.

Bill also brought in Rich McNanna ('00), who first dubbed in Bills Heoh & the Blaze-a-Trons. Bill then cast his fiance (now his bride), Georgette Reilly ('86), in a supporting Gokudo role. After hearing Georgettes performance, Gokudos producer asked Bill to cast Georgette in an even larger role, that of Gokudos demon-imp Ikkyu.  Bill, eager to keep the paychecks in the family, happily obliged.

Jim Ward ('92) has worked with Bill on several projects, including the California-filmed Indie feature Last Chance (directed by Malcolm in the Middle's Hal, Bryan Cranston). In Gokudo, Jim voices Pegasus, the famed winged horse who is transformed into a body-building stud.

Mark Roger ('82), whom first appeared onstage with Bill in 1974, has a main role in volumes 3 & 4 of Gokudo, that of the fabled Dragon God.  Dan Bello ('85) voices the villainous Magic King in Volume 1, while Joanne Tartaglino ('82) voices the powerful talking tree Jyoka in Volumes 4 & 5.  Joannes hubby John Tartaglino ('79) plays an arduous monkey (dont ask) in Volume 4.

Other SHU alumns performing voices of various soldiers, guards, demons and villagers throughout the Gokudo series include Michael Perreca ('83), Joe Prussak ('89) (Volumes 1 & 5), Joe Pacillo ('92) (Volumes 4 & 5), Ken Spassione ('94) (Volume 3), and to Bills shame, Glen Albright ('80). Bill offered Glen a tiny role merely to keep Glen off the streets, and was stunned when Glen actually turned in exemplary work.  Glen voices a tough soldier-turned-chicken in Volume 5, as well as a crying mamas boy - perhaps it was the type-casting!

Gokudo  (a Media Blasters release), is currently available on Video and DVD for sale or rental.  Interested consumers can find the product online at www.amazon.com, or at their local video store.  The video store, SunCoast Video, carries the series. Volumes 1 thru 4 have been released, with Volume 5 scheduled for release soon.

Bill hopes to have Volume 6, the final volume of Gokudo episodes, dubbed before the end of the Summer 2002. Meanwhile, plans are underway to screen the first three episodes of Gokudo (Volume 1) at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in Providence on the morning of Saturday, August 10th. Bill, Georgette and many of the English-language cast will be in attendance.

The series Gokudo is best-described as an adventure-parody of Quest stories like Lord of the Rings. Genre conventions get flayed and trashed in very silly fashion. The character of Gokudo himself has the Japanese nickname of rude swordsman, and the series is rated 13 & up its inappropriate for viewing by little kids. Of course, the little kid in all of you may get a big kick out of listening to your fellow alumns strut their stuff this Summer in Gokudo!
